my ambitious 2026 tbr

In addition to my goal of reading 100 books this year, I have also selected 12 books off my TBR to prioritize. Here's what they are and how it's going!

Beloved by Toni Morrison - COMPLETE. I absolutely see why this is an American classic; it's a masterfully told ghost story with such beautiful writing, and Morrison does an incredible job fleshing out all these characters. I don't know if I could ever read it again because of how dark and brutal it gets, but I'm really glad I read it. I would've say I enjoyed it, per se, because I don't think I enjoyed anything that happens in this book, but it is genuinely incredible.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - IN PROGRESS. I already know this basic plot beats of this one, but I'm really enjoying seeing it unfold. I'm listening to the audiobook in chunks, an hour here, two hours there, so who knows when I'll actually finish this one. Currently I'm at the carnival with Franz and Albert.

Carrie by Stephen King - It's wild that I've gotten to my big age loving horror and have yet to give Stephen King a try. And I have a soft spot for the musical adaptation, as well as the thoroughly mediocre 2013 movie with Chloe Grace Moretz. (You know when you see a movie as a teenager and then you like it forever even though it's not good? That.)

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis - I love all things demon-related, and this has just been on my list for forever.

Vanishing World by Sayaka Murata - Because she's a genius and I love her and I will read everything she puts out. I meant to read this last year but got overwhelmed with thesis stuff.

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami - I've read three of Murakami's other books - I enjoyed What I Talk About When I Talk About Running and Novelist as Vocation, but didn't like First Person Singular so much. I'm looking forward to checking out one of his novels finally.

The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter - I've read the titular story in this collection and absolutely loved it, so it's high time I read the others.

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie - I know the ending because practically everyone does at this point, but I also knew the ending of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd going in and still had a great time.

Redwall by Brian Jacques - The Warrior Cats kid in me yearns for the animal fantasy novel.

Emma by Jane Austen - I need to expand my Janeite cred beyond Pride and Prejudice.

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston - I've liked the short stories I've read by Hurston, so I wanted to check out her longer work, too.

Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro - Curious to see if this makes me cry as much as Never Let Me Go did.

comments

[Marina/Eloise oneshot, set in an AU where Marina's secret wasn't revealed by Whistledown, and she married Colin.]

Author's notes: Originally written for a fill for femslashfete .
